A police spokesman told E! News a misdemeanor warrant has been issued for actor Russell Brand's arrest. The warrant is for criminal damage to property in the amount of $700, according to E!

New Orleans police said Tuesday they were seeking to interview the actor after a photographer said the comedian angrily snatched his phone and threw it.

Brand posted a puzzling Twitter response to the reports on Wednesday.

"Since Steve Jobs died, I cannot bear to see anyone use an iPhone irreverently, what I did was a tribute to his memory," Brand wrote on Wednesday afternoon.

TMZ.com said Timothy Jackson, whom it identified as a paparazzi photographer, filed a police report citing "criminal damages" over the Monday incident.

Jackson said he was among a group of photographers shooting Brand, 36. When Brand spotted Jackson photographing from his car using an iPhone, the British comic wrestled the phone from his hand and tossed it, Jackson claimed in a police report he filed immediately.

The celebrity news site ran an uncaptioned photo of a smashed window.

Brand has been in New Orleans shooting Diablo Cody's untitled directorial debut with co-stars Julianne Hough and Octavia Spencer.
