Skateboard park to open in Mastic

Local officials and community leaders held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday morning for a $500,000 skateboard park in Mastic.

The park, to be paid for with equal funds from the Town of Brookhaven and Suffolk County, was spearheaded by Supervisor Mark Lesko and the late Councilman Keith Romaine, as well as Suffolk County Legis. Kate Browning.

Brookhaven Councilman Daniel Panico, a close friend to Romaine who now represents the district in which the park is located, helped pushed the project to fruition.

Mastic Skate Park, located on the grounds of the Brookhaven Aquatic Center, was designed in part by the William Floyd High School Skate and BMX Committee. The park is directly across from the high school.

Ed Romaine, Keith Romaine's father, said at the groundbreaking that he will "have a smile on his face" every time he passes the site.

Panico said he will introduce legislation to dedicate the park in Keith Romaine's honor.

The park is set to open by Thanksgiving.
