South Huntington schools to discuss tax cap
To educate the public about the state’s new 2 percent property-tax levy cap, the South Huntington school district and its parent-teacher association will host a forum next month. Gary Bixhorn, chief operating officer of Eastern Suffolk BOCES, will be the guest speaker.
“We want to make sure everyone understands what the tax cap means as we head into the budget season,” said Doreen Boehme, past PTA Council president and legislative committee co-chair. “We’ll explain what is going on, give some history and explain what some of the cost drivers are to understand what and why this is happening.”
Residents from neighboring districts are invited to attend and some questions will be taken from the audience.
The forum will be held Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. at Stimson Middle School, 401 Oakwood Rd., Huntington Station.
“The tax cap is going to make for a very challenging year in education,” Boehme said. “We want to tell the public how difficult it’s going to be to put together a budget and stay within it.”
