Southampton shelter takes in 17 puppies

The Southampton Animal Shelter took in 21 dogs, 17 of them puppies, on Sunday after they were rescued by the Humane Society of Northwest Georgia.

Cathy Duemler, an outreach coordinator for the shelter, said the puppies are from four different litters and the shelter also took in each litter’s mother, some of which are only about a year old. Included in the bunch are some shepherd mixes and collie mixes, she said.

According to Duemler, one litter was rescued from a drainpipe and another had been surrendered to a pound in Georgia and was set to be euthanized. Southampton Animal Shelter has a partnership with the humane society in Georgia, Duemler said, and takes in dogs that have been rescued, are at risk of euthanization or that can’t fit in other shelters because of overcrowding.

Duemler said the dogs are not ready for adoption yet. They need to be spayed or neutered and get rabies shots before leaving the shelter.

Anyone interested in adopting can come to the shelter for a meet-and-greet and to start the application process, Duemler said. She said things like other pets in the household, children in the household and whether there is a fenced-in yard are factors considered when selecting homes for the dogs.

The Southampton Animal Shelter is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week. It's at 102 Old Riverhead Rd. in Hampton Bays. The adoption fee is $120.
