Summer theater on Long Island

RED (Guild Hall's John Drew Theater, 158 Main St., East Hampton, through June 8). The 2010 Tony winner for best play plumbs the creative mind of Abstract Expressionist Mark Rothko as seen through the window of his biggest commission -- "The Seagrams Murals" for The Four Seasons restaurant. 42ND STREET (Gateway Playhouse, 215 South Country Rd., Bellport, through June 8). A Gateway favorite break-a-leg musical -- this being its fourth staging since 1989 -- taps to the revised choreography of the 2001 Broadway revival. CONVICTION (Bay Street Theatre, Long Wharf, Sag Harbor, Tuesday-June 15). A world premiere and Bay Street artistic chief Scott Schwartz's directorial debut in his new job: The drama by Carey Crim tells the story of a charismatic teacher, colleague, neighbor and husband accused by a student of sexually inappropriate behavior. Terrence McNally's 1996 Tony Award winner for best play focuses on singer Maria Callas, who, while teaching opera students, reveals the personal sacrifices demanded by a commitment to art. TRAVESTIES (Bay Street Theatre, Sag Harbor, June 24- July 20). Tom Stoppard's brainy tour de force taking place in 1917 and 1979 fantasizes comically about one man's encounter with Oscar Wilde, James Joyce and Vladimir Lenin, among others.
