Unneeded medicines can be dropped off in Selden

Suffolk County police will collect unwanted medications for safe disposal Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Selden Fire Department, 44 Woodmere Pl.

Residents may drive up, drop off the medicine and drive away, according to a news release from state Sen. John Flanagan (R-East Northport).

Flanagan said the drug drop-off will help keep medicine away from children and drug abusers. The collection also will help protect the environment because drugs dumped down drains or flushed in toilets can get into local waterways, he said.

“Getting drugs out of homes in our community will help to minimize the exposure of these dangerous substances to our youngest residents and hopefully help them avoid the pitfalls of drug abuse,” he said.

Counselors from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence will be at the event to answer questions about substance abuse and to help residents who believe a family member is abusing drugs. Counseling sessions will be private and free.
