Long Island weather: Rain gets more intense Friday night, with storm chance
Long Island was seeing some light, widely-scattered showers around mid-afternoon Friday, with the heavier precipitation still in the wings, forecasters said.
The steadier, heavier rain was still well to the west of New York City at close to 3 p.m. and wouldn’t be making its way to western parts of the Island until after 6 p.m. or so, said Peter Wichrowski, National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton.
Those setting out on the early side for the evening commute shouldn’t be too affected, he said. But chances of rain increase the later you leave, particularly the farther west you are.
The hours from 7 p.m. to around midnight bring potential for thunderstorms and an isolated risk for a severe storm.
Winds Friday were becoming increasingly gusty — set to remain so into Saturday — with any severe storm bringing gusts up to 40 to 50 mph, the weather service said.
A flash flood watch is in effect for Long Island from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday, with rain amounts of 1½ to 2 inches expected, locally higher in some spots.
There is a gale warning for waters off both shores of Long Island from 4 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday. There is a small craft advisory for the western Long Island Sound from 1 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday.
Dry weather returns Saturday, but it comes with colder air, meaning highs in the upper 40s, feeling cooler given the winds, the weather service said.
Temperatures dip to about 30 degrees early Sunday, Veterans Day, which warms up to the mid-40s under sunny skies. The normal for the day at MacArthur Airport is a high of 55 and a low of 38.
The cold stretch continues into the start of the workweek, and another period of heavy rain is forecast for Tuesday, the weather service said.
