Long Island weather: Up to 4 inches of snow but rising temperatures Saturday

Snowfall totals ranging from 1 to 4 inches are expected for Long Island on Saturday, forecasters said, with 10 to 20 mph winds and temperatures rising from the 20s through the mid-30s throughout the day.

“Snow totals have increased slightly since previous forecasts,” Joe Pollina, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton, said Friday night, adding that the service has issued a winter weather advisory for Saturday because of the precipitation. “We’ll have higher amounts across Nassau County.”

It will start off cold, Pollina said, as low as the teens and even down to the single-digit temperatures in the pine barrens, but warm up rapidly to nearly 40 degrees by midnight.

Snow could be followed by rain.

"Coastal areas will see the transition to rain first with the rain/snow line moving north through the evening," the weather service said in a statement. It added, "Most of the precipitation moves out of the area after midnight."

However, the Sunday to Thursday stretch — which includes Monday's Martin Luther King Jr. holiday — should all be sunny, the weather service said.

Sunday will be cold but no rain or snow is expected, Pollina said, with temperatures ranging between 30 and 40 degrees for much of the day. It should be clear and breezy.

Monday's holiday for the civil rights leader's birthday also should be sunny and bright, and a touch colder. The high is expected to be in the low 30s.

That clear and cold patch continues until at least Thursday, the weather service said. Highs will be in the upper 20s to mid-30s.
