Following an unseasonably warm start to the weekend, Long Islanders will see a chilly and damp Sunday and had better bundle up for the week, which is expected to bring below-average temperatures.

Rain is expected to linger through Sunday afternoon before tapering off, with temperatures topping out at 55 degrees thanks to a cold front, according to the National Weather Service. By 5 p.m., expect to grab a jacket when temperatures creep down to a chilly 48 degrees. Wind gusts can reach up to 25 mph during the afternoon.

Up to a quarter inch of rain is possible on Sunday, but it won’t be a “great amount of rainfall,” said meteorologist Nelson Vaz.

That coolness is expected to last through the week, replacing the record-breaking warm weather that treated Long Island. Temperatures soared to 15 to 20 degrees higher than normal, the weather service said. Islip hit 72 degrees Saturday, shattering the 2014 high of 67 degrees, Vaz said. But say goodbye to those mild days.

“We’re going to come back down towards normal,” Vaz said.

Long Island will see a reprieve from rain on Monday. Temperatures on Monday are expected to be 3 to 5 degrees cooler than seasonally normal and could even drop into the 20s overnight in Suffolk County, Vaz said. Temperatures are expected to bottom out near freezing in Suffolk County.

The metro area might even see frost, thanks to Monday night’s “perfect frost condition” of clear skies and a light wind, Vaz said.

The rain clouds are expected to return Tuesday and linger through Wednesday morning. It’s unclear how much rain Long Island might see, but Vaz said it looked like the Island could see up to half an inch of rain.

Things will dry out Wednesday and the weather is expected to be cool and sunny with temperatures in the high 40s and bottoming out in the low to mid-30s. Still, temperatures are expected to be “below normal” for this time of year, Vaz said.
