It's clear skies ahead for the Labor Day weekend
Threatening clouds that crept over Long Island early Thursday night burst open by 10 p.m., drenching Nassau and Suffolk but forecasters said it would clear up long before the morning commute.
Friday, as expected, was clear and warm with a similar forecast on tap for the Labor Day weekend.
The good weather should last at least until Wednesday night before a 30% chance of showers Thursday, the National Weather Service said.
The summer has been abnormally hot and dry, and that pattern will persist at least into next week, forecasters said.
Friday's high was forecast to be 85 degrees with plenty of sun before the temperature drops to 64 and remains mostly clear, according to the weather service.
After that, Long Islanders will be hard-pressed to tell the days apart over the holiday weekend. Saturday, Sunday and Monday are each predicted to have mostly clear skies and daytime temperatures of about 78, dropping to 68 at night.
Tuesday and Wednesday will bring clouds and sun with temperatures in the high 70s before dipping into the 60s at night.
The average temperature of 74.6 degrees for the three months of the 2020 meteorological summer was just two-tenths of a degree below the record set in 2010 of 74.8 degrees, the weather service said.
The weather service's records began in 1963 for Islip. June, July and August make up the meteorological summer. The astronomical summer runs from June 20 to Sept. 20.
And the amount of rain this summer has been less than needed: Nassau is abnormally dry and Suffolk is in the midst of a moderate drought, according to the Drought Monitor, a government project with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
