Long Island weather: Sunny, cold Tuesday with high wind gusts
Tuesday is turning out sunny, cold and very windy before days get increasingly milder for the rest of the workweek, forecasters say.
Around 11 a.m. Tuesday, the temperature at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma was 32 degrees, feeling like 19 with wind chill from the northwest winds, gusting to about 32 mph.
“Some of those holiday decorations are out and about and wandering around because of the winds,” said Rich Hoffman, News 12 Long Island meteorologist.
Temperatures were expected to rise to the mid to upper 30s, feeling colder with those winds, the National Weather Service said, with 42 the airport's normal high for the day.
“Winds diminish tonight and remain on the light side on Wednesday,” the weather service said.
As for later in the week, we're getting stormy conditions Friday, the first day of astronomical winter, Hoffman said.
The early-morning low Wednesday is expected to be in the low 20s. The day brings sunshine and highs right around normal in the low 40s. Thursday starts out with mostly sunny skies but it could rain in the afternoon.
Rain becomes likely overnight into Friday morning, as temperatures reach into the upper 50s during the day, the weather service said.
"Some rain could be heavy at times on Friday," Hoffman said, warning of possible coastal flooding.
