More than 500 flights were canceled at area airports Sunday as thunderstorms hit the region.

In the 24 hours leading up to 7:10 p.m. Sunday, 513 flights had been canceled out of Kennedy and LaGuardia airports with weather-related departure delays ranging on average of up to an hour and 15 minutes, and 45 minutes, respectively, according to Flight Aware, an online flight tracking database. That was more than the 354 flights delayed or canceled at those airports Saturday.

Flights were continuing to run mostly on time out of Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma, where just one cancellation was reported Sunday.

Monday looks to be sunny and dry with high temperatures approaching 90 degrees.

It is expected to cool to the lower 80s on Tuesday before dropping to the mid-70s Wednesday and remaining at 80 degrees or below through the coming weekend.

"We’re looking at much lower temperatures than what we’ve been seeing for some time now," said National Weather Service meteorologist James Tomasini.

And it will be cooler than it historically is for early August, with the National Weather Service Climate Center in Islip showing average highs in the low- to mid-80s for this time of year, Tomasini said.

"It’s a little bit below normal from what we’re used to seeing," he said.

For Tuesday, the weather service said, there is a chance of showers before 11 a.m. and then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. After 2 p.m., showers become "likely." A thunderstorm is also possible.

The possibility of showers then lasts through the coming weekend, according to the weather service.

Heavy rainfall over this past weekend led to 16 closures at Nassau County beaches Sunday, 14 on the North Shore and two on the South Shore.

Suffolk County issued an advisory at 63 beaches, including 23 in Huntington Town, 21 in Brookhaven, 10 in Islip, five in Smithtown and three in Babylon. Havens Beach in East Hampton was the only East End beach impacted by the advisory.

Advisories are issued as a precautionary measure for beaches known to be impacted by stormwater runoff caused by heavy rainfall, the counties' health departments said in news releases. The advisories were scheduled to be lifted at 6 a.m. Monday, but could be extended with additional rainfall.
