The week ahead will bring intermittent rain but more sunny days and temperatures "near normal," according the National Weather Service.

After sunny skies during the day Sunday, clouds were expected to roll in Sunday night, and rain begin Monday after about 8 a.m., Jay Engle, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton, said Sunday.

A high temperature of about 52 degrees is expected Monday. The average high temperature for the date in Islip is 50 degrees.

Monday is also expected to be breezy as a southwest wind blows at 13 to 20 mph with gusts as high as 33 mph.

The wet weather "should start to move out late Monday afternoon or early Monday evening," Engle said.

Total rainfall should be in the range of a half to three-quarters of an inch.

The sun returns Tuesday, bringing a high of about 56 degrees. The winds will slow significantly. Tuesday evening will become cloudy, with temperatures dropping to near freezing as a "quick-moving weather system" moves in, Engle said.

There’s a 30% chance of rain starting in the early hours Wednesday after 2 a.m. and continuing into the early Wednesday afternoon. If it comes, it’ll be a "cold, wet rain," and "maybe even a few wet snowflakes," Engle predicted.

Wednesday’s high is expected to be around 49 degrees, and the overnight low should be right around 32.

Thursday will be sunny, with a high near 50, according to the weather service.
