Long Island weather forecast: More sunshine followed by still more sunshine
More sunshine Sunday coming right after Saturday's mostly clear skies, should help fade memories of a rainy end to the workweek that the remnants of tropical storm Debby brought to Long Island.
The National Weather Service was saying Saturday evening that Sunday on Long Island will be
mostly sunny with a high temperature near 79 degrees. In the afternoon a light and variable wind is expected tol blow out of the south at 5 to 9 p.m.Sunday night should be mostly clear with a low temperature around 66 degrees.
Clear to mostly clear skies are expected through the coming workweek. The weather service said there is a 20% chance of showers on Monday before 2 p.m. but that is the only mention of rain in the weather service forecasts until Saturday when there is a 30% chance of precipitation.
High temperatures through the week are expected to be around 80 degrees.
As for the rain from Debby, Brian Ciemnecki, a meteorologist for the weather service, said rainfall numbers for this past Friday were around or below a quarter inch for Long Island.
The agency's Upton station recorded .27 inches, while Farmingdale received .22 inches of precipitation. Islip experienced .19 inches of rainfall, he said on Saturday morning.
"We knew the rain was going to dry up a little as it [Debby] came through," Ciemnecki said. "The bigger issue was the wind. The winds were rather gusty."
Debby’s winds caused power outages across Long Island. According to PSEG’s online outage map and data, the utility reported 75 active power outages impacting 1,020 of its 1,158,874 customers as of late Friday.
