Forecasters say between 2 and 4 inches of snow is expected Friday overnight into Saturday morning, in what the National Weather Service says is a “quick-moving system” that will pass south of Long Island.
While earlier predictions had called for about an inch, the storm tracked farther north Friday. If it turns farther north, there is a “reasonable worst case” scenario in which Long Island would get up to 5 inches, the weather service said.
“Snow should be entering the area from the west around midnight and quickly spread east into the early morning hours,” the weather service said in its forecast. “The snow should begin to lessen in intensity shortly after daybreak, but some light snow or flurries may linger into the middle of the morning, especially east of the city.”
A winter weather advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday.
The weather service said although daytime highs Saturday and Sunday will be in the mid to upper 30s, strong northwest winds will make it feel like it's between 15 and 25 degrees and colder at night. Winds could gust up to between 25 and 30 mph.
Sunday and Monday will be sunny, with highs in the mid to high 30s and in the 20s at night, along with wind chills making it feel between 10 and 20 degrees. Tuesday and Wednesday will see the sunshine continue and highs will go into the low 40s, the weather service said.
February so far has brought the most snow Long Island has seen in two years. Last Tuesday's storm brought 9 inches to some parts of the North Shore.
