After a chilly, damp start to the weekend, Long Islanders can expect a “gradual improvement” Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
Lingering light rain will continue before 11 a.m. Sunday and mostly cloudy skies are forecast with a high near 55 degrees.
“It might take until the afternoon to completely end out east on the forks,”according to Bill Goodman, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton.
The weather service had issued a Coastal Flood Statement until noon Sunday, but cancelled the alert Saturday evening because "total water levels are no longer expected to reach minor coastal flood benchmarks," according to its website.
As the clouds move out Sunday night, more spring-like temperatures will return, Goodman said.
“We should be done with this dreary weather once we get rid of the light rain and drizzle tomorrow.”
Monday’s forecast calls for partly sunny skies and a high near 61 degrees.
There’s a chance for light rain overnight into Tuesday, when it’s slated to be mostly cloudy in the mid-60s.
Sunny skies return Wednesday, albeit with a cooldown that will see temperatures in the mid-50s, the weather service said.
