40°Good evening

The new workweek promises some typical Long Island spring weather: high temperatures ranging from the high 40s to the low 60s and occasional rain.

The National Weather Service on Sunday issued a "coastal flood statement" running from Sunday evening through late Sunday night. Southern Suffolk County should expect brief minor flooding in vulnerable areas near the waterfront.

For Monday, the weather service predicted patchy fog before 11 a.m. and a 30% chance of showers, mainly after 11 a.m. The high temperature for the day should be about 57 degrees, which would be 4 degrees higher than the average high for the date in Islip. The wind Monday is expected to blow out of the south at 15 to 17 mph with gusts as high as 30 mph.

Monday night the chance of rain is 100% with a thunderstorm possible before 2 a.m. The thermometer is expected to drop to around 42 degrees.

"Showers are possible in the daytime  ... [but the] heaviest rain will be with the front which should begin to approach late day and come through at night," according to the weather service's area forecast discussion.

Tuesday there is a 30% chance of showers before 8 a.m. but then the skies will gradually clear, the weather service said.

Increasing clouds are expected on Wednesday with showers possible Wednesday night, Thursday and Friday.

The high temperature will be about 49 degrees Wednesday, and rise to the low 60s Thursday and Friday, according to the weather service.
