The rainy weather that dampened Long Island on Saturday looks to continue until Monday night before the area gets at least three days of mostly sunny skies.

The National Weather Service forecast Saturday evening said there was a 60% chance of rain Sunday, mainly between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. with areas of fog before 11 a.m. The high temperature should be about 57 degrees, two degrees warmer that the normal high for the date in Islip.

Sunday a wind of 6 mph to 8 mph is expected to initially come out of the west before shifting out of the northwest later in the morning.

Sunday night the chance of rain is a full 100% with the showers coming mainly after 2 a.m., the weather service said. The thermometer is expected to drop to around 38 degrees.

"As far as rain is concerned, overnight Sunday night we’re looking at another round of rainfall," weather service meteorologist Joe Pollina said Saturday morning. "That looks like an even better chance for rainfall [than Saturday]. We’ve got a 95% to 100% chance around midnight on Monday through daybreak."

Those showers will keep up until midmorning on Monday when the high temperature will only hit the upper 40s, according to the weather service. Monday night will also be rainy as temperatures dip into the mid-30s.

The showers should stop on Tuesday and it should remain sunny for most of the workweek, but temperatures are not expected to break 50 degrees until Thursday.

"We slowly taper off through the day on Monday and dry conditions return everywhere on Tuesday," Pollina said.

Rain is expected to return with warm temperatures in the mid-50s on Friday.
