NWS: Sunday sun should melt snowfall
By midmorning Sunday, the sun could have partly to mostly melted away the snow that fell during the storm that began on Saturday evening, the National Weather Service said.
Northern Long Island was expected to get 4 to 8 inches of snow; just 2 to 4 inches were predicted for southern Long Island, said Joe Pollina, NWS meteorologist in Upton.
All of the Island also could see rain — and slush — though not freezing rain.
The service downgraded its forecasts on Saturday evening as the storm increasingly looked less severe.
After the storm, the clouds should roll out.
On Sunday, “By early to midmorning, we’re clear,” Pollina said.
“And we are looking at temperatures that are pretty close to normal for this time of year; that means above freezing, maybe in the middle 40s,” he said.
Islip’s temperature at this point usually reaches 41 degrees.
A short-term warming trend sets in Sunday, which could push North Shore temperatures into the lower 60s by midweek.
The still-chilly Atlantic, however, should keep thermometers on the South Shore from rising above the lower to mid-50s, he said.
“Sunday will be warmer than it was today [Saturday], and then Monday will be warmer, with highs around 50, and then Tuesday we really start to get into the warmth, with highs possibly in the lower 60s for portions of Long Island,” Pollina said.
The first snowflakes began falling in Huntington on Saturday about 5:20 p.m., just as Huntington Town Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci and Highway Superintendent Kevin Orelli finished explaining their preparations.
More than 100 highway workers and about 150 contractors will be working through the night to make sure the town’s 800 miles of roads are clear by Sunday morning, they said.
“Use extreme caution if going out this evening,” Lupinacci said.
