After a Sunday dominated by downpours, Long Islanders should anticipate potential rain through Monday evening, according to forecasters.

The week is expected to kick off with a 40% chance of showers and storms, with the weather otherwise "mostly cloudy, warm and humid" and high temperatures in the low 80s, National Weather Service meteorologist Jay Engle said Sunday evening.

Monday evening, the chance of rain drops to 30%, with the weather otherwise mostly cloudy and low temperatures in the mid- to upper-60s.

The service had issued a hazardous weather outlook for a "slight risk of excessive rainfall" lasting into Sunday evening across Nassau and Suffolk Counties, with the storm developing over New York City and moving east, impacting memorials on Long Island scheduled ahead of the anniversary of Sept. 11.

The rain arrived just days before the effects of Hurricane Lee are expected to be felt in the region.

Weather service meteorologist Dave Radell said Sunday that the hurricane, about 285 miles northeast of the Leeward Islands, southwest of Bermuda, was expected to move northwest before taking a turn north.

The greatest impact on Long Island is expected to be hazardous beach conditions developing Wednesday night into Thursday and Friday, he said.

"What we can expect to see is a period of dangerous rip currents and some high surf at Atlantic-facing beaches toward the end of the week," Radell said. "That's really all we are expecting for Long Island at this time."

Engle said the NWS expects partial sun with a slight chance of an isolated shower on Tuesday, with temperatures in the lower 80s.

Showers are likely Wednesday, mainly after 8 a.m., but both Thursday and Friday should be mostly sunny. High temperatures Wednesday through Friday should range from about 75 to 77 degrees, according to the weather service.
