64°Good afternoon

Long Islanders can expect a dreary weekend with temperatures in the 50s before some sunshine next week, the National Weather Service has forecast.

Saturday morning "is going to start off very cloudy, kind of drizzly with some low clouds and potential fog moving in," said Brian Ciemnecki, a meteorologist with the weather service's Upton office. While the afternoon will likely dry up, skies will remain mostly cloudy with maybe an hour or two of sun before nightfall, when there is another "slight" chance of rain, he added.

Sunday morning and afternoon are expected to be cloudy and breezy, the NWS forecast. After 5 p.m., a "relatively strong front" that Ciemnecki said has been "impacting most of the country with severe weather" will pass through the island.

This storm system has overturned semitrucks and triggered tornado threats in the southern and midwestern states, The Associated Press reported.

But Long Islanders should not worry, according to Ciemnecki.

"By the time the front gets here and the type of day that it moves through, we're not really expecting any severe weather with it," Ciemnecki said. "It's just a period of moderate to locally heavy rainfall as it moves across the area. Maybe there are some leftover showers for Monday morning."

Strong breezes will blow Saturday night through Sunday as well, some gusts reaching 39 mph Sunday afternoon.

Rain should stop by Monday afternoon, when temperatures will hover around 55 but the skies will remain overcast, according to the NWS.

The weather service forecasts sunny days Tuesday and Wednesday, when high temperatures will reach the mid-50s.
