The state Department of Environmental Conservation’s annual Fall Fishing and Children’s Festival is coming to Hempstead Lake State Park this weekend.
The department’s I FISH NY Program and Freshwater Fisheries Unit is sponsoring the event on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., along with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
Festival activities include fly-fishing instruction, casting practice, loaner rods, free bait and fish cleaning services. Children’s activities will include pumpkin decorating, a magic show, pony rides and face painting. A display area also will be set up with several fishing and environmental organizations.
Before the festival, South and MacDonald Ponds in the park will be stocked with trout by Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery and New York State Parks.
No fishing license is required for the event. Admission is $6 for anyone over the age of 12.
