Westhampton’s Murphy, Jordan, Berman, Gilbakian excel
Winning never rests. And that’s especially true of the Westhampton girls track team. One night after qualifying for the Long Island 4 x 400-meter relay at next month’s Millrose Games, the foursome of Nora Murphy, Jenny Jordan, Kayla Berman and Grace Gilbakian won the Suffolk IV 4 x 200- meter relay in a minute, 51.55 seconds Thursday night at the Jim Zeitler Relays at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood.
Murphy, Jordan and Berman, along with Murphy’s younger sister, Maeve, won the Suffolk IV 1,600-meter sprint medley relay in 4:29.10 early in the meet.
“I feel like I could fall asleep,” Nora Murphy said. “But I definitely think that it was good to run these races today to get speed in our legs.”
Westhampton was all alone for most of the 4 x 200 relay. East Hampton finished second in 1:54.83. What made the dominance all the more impressive was that the four had never run a 4 x 200, preferring the 4 x 400. “We just did what we usually do and ran our race the way we should have,” Jordan said.
Berman credited their sprint medley win to Jordan’s good start. “By the time I was up, we were in the lead already,” Berman said. “It was easy to keep the lead.”
Westhampton ran a 3:59.83 in the Long Island 4 x 400-meter relay at the Millrose Trials Wednesday night at The Armory in Manhattan. They will run at the Millrose Games on Feb. 20 at the Armory.
“We got out good and didn’t get boxed in,” Berman said of the Millrose Trials victory. “We got the lead right away and kept it the whole time.”
Bayport-Blue Point won the Suffolk V 3 x 55-meter shuttle hurdle relay in 26.93 seconds, a Suffolk record. Kathleen Cibuls, Dariya Dolan and Taylor Gensler broke the previous county mark of 27.26, set by Bay Shore last season, according to suffolkxctf.com.
Huntington set two school records. Alex Koumas, Marina Ruzic, Latoya Shand and Nicole Abbondandelo won the Suffolk III 1,600-meter sprint medley relay in 4:29.71, breaking the previous mark of 4:29.86, set at last year’s Zeitler Relays.
Ryann Gaffney, Rebecca Caballero and Ekaterina Koulakova won the Suffolk III 3 x 55-meter shuttle hurdle relay in 28.15 seconds, breaking the previous school mark of 29.15 at last year’s Zeitler relays, Huntington coach Shawn Anderson said.
