Work at Superfund site in Farmingdale to be discussed

A meeting to discuss a proposed cleanup of a state Superfund site in Farmingdale is scheduled for 7 tonight.

Representatives with the state Department of Environmental Conservation and the state Department of Health are to explain the details of a proposal for the Farmingdale Plaza Cleaners site, a Class 2 site that, according to the state registry of inactive hazardous waste sites, “represents a significant threat to public health or the environment.”

The public meeting will be at the Farmingdale Public Library, 116 Merritts Rd.

The proposed remediation for the Superfund site, in the Waldbaum’s Shopping Plaza at 450 Main St. where tetrachloroethene, or PCE, was detected, is called a “no further action plan.”

It includes continuing the soil vapor extraction system in place since November, according to state officials. It also includes the continued implementation of institutional and engineering controls, officials said.

Soil vapor intrusion monitoring will still be conducted and off-site groundwater will still be investigated to study the extent of a volatile organic compounds plume, officials said.

The public comment period on the proposal, available for review at the Farmingdale library and the DEC’s Stony Brook office, runs through March 24.
