Wyatt Schmidt struck out seven and walked two as No. 1 Southampton won its third Suffolk Class B title in five years Wednesday with a 5-1 victory over third-seeded Mattituck.

"I'm happy for the kids, they've worked hard all year for this," Southampton coach Ike Birdsall said. "I'm lucky to coach such a great group of kids that I have here."

Schmidt, who improved to 8-0, went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

"He's been as dependable as can be at the plate and on the mound," Birdsall said. "He's a great kid to coach."

Alex Soyars went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, Eddie McLaughlin had a solo home run in the fifth and scored two runs and Henry Egan added a hit, a walk and two runs for Southampton (19-2).

The Mariners will play for the Long Island Class B championship on Monday at Dowling College.

 

Pierson/Bridgehampton 9, Port Jefferson 4: Forrest Loesch went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs as top-seeded Pierson/Bridgehampton (21-1) captured its second straight Suffolk Class C baseball title.

Tim Markowski added two hits and an RBI for Pierson/Bridgehampton in a game that was suspended after three innings on Tuesday because of rain. Jake Bennett started the game Tuesday and tossed three hitless innings with a walk and two strikeouts.

Nick Kruel picked up the win after pitching four innings in relief Wednesday. Pierson/Bridgehampton (21-1) will play Friends Academy in the Long Island Class C Championship at 4 p.m. on Monday at Farmingdale State College.

Connetquot 2, Longwood 0: Casey Baker struck out seven and walked two in a two-hitter for No. 8 Connetquot (16-9) in a Class AA loser's bracket semifinal win over No. 11 Longwood.

Duane Page singled in Brian McKean with two outs in the third to give the Thunderbirds a 2-0 lead. Justin Scala scored on a fielder's choice in the first inning for Connetquot, which will host No. 9 Half Hollow Hills West (18-6) in the final Thursday at 4 p.m.
