Newsday’s nextLI project took a wide-ranging survey of the views Long Islanders have about life here.

The survey, developed in partnership with Hofstra University, took place from August 3 to September 1, 2022 and reached an unusually large sample of 2,910 residents of Nassau and Suffolk. The research was made possible through funding from Google News Initiative’s Innovation Challenge and was conducted by Productions Plus of Virginia.

According to the poll, a large majority of Long Islanders want more housing options, including affordable and environmentally sustainable choices, while at the same time many say they don’t favor “dense” housing. Read more about the findings here.

Previously, ahead of the 2022 election, relevant results on the political mood of the region were released.

In a recorded survey launch event discussing the results, available in the video above, four Long Island leaders deeply involved in shaping public policy discussed the findings and what it might mean for our region’s future. The conversation took place at Port Jefferson Crossing, a new Conifer Realty LLC affordable housing complex. The participants are:

  • Retha Fernandez, Suffolk County’s Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer
  • Daniel Lloyd, Minority Millennials Founder and Program Director for Accelerate Long Island
  • Gwen O’Shea, Community Development Corporation of Long Island President & CEO
  • Stacey Sikes, Long Island Association Government Affairs and Communications Vice President

The survey launch also included follow-up interviews with several survey respondents who elaborated on their answers.

Survey answers were provided via online panel, face-to-face intercept interviews at popular venues in both counties, QR codes made available to the public and social media campaigns. Data were weighted to represent the adult population of Long Island.
