Editorial: Charles Wang tries again in Plainview
It's baaack.
A controversial large mixed-use development in Plainview proposed by billionaire Charles Wang was derailed seven years ago by withering community opposition. Now it's been revised and faces a public hearing Tuesday before the Oyster Bay Town Board.
The scope has changed -- more housing, no hotel or office space -- but it's still an exciting proposal. It calls for 800 multifamily housing units, 90 senior affordable units, 118,000 square feet of retail and 43 acres for town park and recreational use -- on 143 acres on Old Country and Round Swamp roads.
Rezoning is required, and community concerns about increased traffic and new students probably have not evaporated. We hope town officials show more leadership this time around, as the process starts anew.
