Fred W. Thiele Jr. has delivered for his East End district for 23 years. Thiele, 65, of Sag Harbor, an Independence Party member allied with Democrats, teamed with GOP Sen. Ken LaValle to smartly shepherd a bill to let Stony Brook University lease land for a new Southampton Hospital. He continues to get good legislation passed on water quality, and got approved a bill granting state recognition to the Montaukett Indian nation. He also succeeded in getting more commuter trains for the South Fork. Next stop: affordable housing.

Republican Patrick M. O’Connor, 53, a software engineer and consultant from Shinnecock Hills, wants to work for residents he said are underrepresented on issues like the high cost of living, the opioid crisis and crime. But Thiele has earned another term.

Newsday endorses Thiele.
