Michael Fitzpatrick to represent New York’s 8th Assembly District

When Michael Fitzpatrick talks about fixing the high cost of living, you know what you’re going to hear: mandate relief.
Fitzpatrick, 59, seeks to reform the Triborough amendment to stop step pay increases among public workers while expired contracts are negotiated, to cap binding arbitration at 2 percent, and to create a defined-contribution option for the state pension system.
Fitzpatrick’s steadfast voice in Albany is important, but even he admits he’s alone in talking about fiscal reform. After 14 years, the St. James Republican has to do more to persuade colleagues to address these issues.
Democrat Richard Macellaro, 64, of Kings Park, is a retired home-care administrator and local activist. He wants to consolidate school districts and mandate that there be a master land use plan for every town. He’s dedicated, but lacks the specific knowledge of issues critical to New York’s future.
