In his first term, Keith P. Brown showed he can play a collaborative and constructive role in a chamber where his party is perpetually in the minority.
Brown, 54, of Northport, wrestles with constituents’ problems with state agencies, organizes useful discussions involving community institutions, and looks to amend majority-approved legislation with an eye to improving it.
As ranking GOP member of the alcoholism and drug abuse committee, Brown has agitated to get opiate-settlement funds effectively distributed and champions “best practices” in addiction treatment. He also pushes for environmental infrastructure improvements.
Democrat Cooper Macco, 36, of Halesite, a lawyer specializing in bankruptcy issues, calls for "common-sense gun control laws" and defends abortion rights protections. Macco is bullish on cannabis businesses; Brown is not a fan. Macco touts a child care tax credit and universal pre-K as top priorities, and seems a promising prospect in future elections.
Newsday endorses Brown.
