As Assembly deputy majority leader and chair of the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian legislative caucus, Michaelle C. Solages, 37, of Elmont, uses her clout to deliver for her district. She was key in negotiating a development deal for UBS Arena that would create a community center in her district; now there is $5 million in escrow to build and operate it. Solages must see that project through if she wins a fifth term, and continue her efforts to make the Southern State Parkway safer. Another priority: a comprehensive early childhood learning plan that would expand pre-K seats and child care.
Republican Cara Castronuova, 42, of Elmont, is a celebrity trainer and championship boxer focused on ensuring there are youth recreational programs in her community. With some experience under her belt on how government works, she has a future in politics.
Newsday endorses Solages.
