Hunting, guns and limited freedoms
In response to all those opposed to hunting, please spare me [“Hunting seen from two sides,” Letters, Dec. 2].
Take the firearm out of the equation and many of these self-righteous champions of wildlife have no problem eating beef, fowl or fish from slaughterhouses. Then they bring up the National Rifle Association and crime with guns. So we see clearly what their agenda is. And what about the large housing tracts where they live that have pushed wildlife to the brink? I hear crickets! Little outcry over the building of houses on shorefronts, and pollutants that go with it that push fish farther offshore.
It’s about the gun, that’s all.
Sorry, I like to hunt, and if you don’t, that’s fine. So get off your high horse and leave me alone. My licenses and taxes on sporting equipment go to wildlife management. What do you contribute to that cause? Probably nothing.

Why does the Long Island director of the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association consider background checks, training requirements, assault-weapons bans, and sales bans for people subject to domestic-violence restraining orders to be violations of personal freedoms [“Americans and their firearms,” Letters, Nov. 30]?
Our freedoms are limited by parameters so they don’t infringe on rights of others. That’s why we have laws that govern speed limits and minimum-age requirements, for example.
Great countries are built on the well-being of the people as a whole, not the whims of the myopic few.

Levy fines to stop oil entering canal
Regarding “Oil still seeping into canal” [News, Dec. 3], it is a poor excuse that the delay in the cleanup of the site in Massapequa Park is due to homeowners’ failure to allow a contractor access to their yard. To continue to allow the waters to be contaminated is prohibited and irresponsible. Fine the homeowners immediately and see how fast they allow access.
