Letter: Better campaign finance reform

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's proposed reforms to campaign finance laws will not succeed in changing our well-established state plutocracy ["Time ripe for tax-financed campaigns," Opinion, Feb. 7].

Writers Eric Lane and Michael Waldman are right that "campaigns are dominated by wealthy donors." Their solution, to create a small-donor matching system, would be a diversion of taxpayer money and a mere whitewash of the real problem.

The solution cannot focus on money alone. It must include restrictions on the geographic origin of the money. Donations should be limited to voters registered within political boundaries of the office.

Term limits and a cap on campaign contributions to a defined dollar amount are other important reforms.
