Gun locks and safes are a win-win solution to the problem of so many tragic shootings [“Nassau Dems want guns stored in vaults,” News, May 18].

Nassau County Legis. Ellen Birnbaum (D-Great Neck) is proposing a bill to require individuals to secure their guns with a locking device or in a safe storage container when the gun is not in their immediate possession or control.

This is a win for the responsible gun owner who already secures his or her firearms and for the neighbors of the irresponsible gun owner who does not.

It’s also a win for the firearms retailer selling gun-safety equipment. But the biggest win of all is for the child who is not unintentionally shot by a playmate whose parents failed to secure their gun.
