Where does the Federal Emergency Management Agency get the nerve to charge Long Island homeowners for flood insurance, and then give grants to synagogues for security ["A safe place to worship," News, Aug. 19]? How dare they spend my hard-earned money? Religious institutions have their own money. Why must I pay for their security?

What ever happened to separation of church and state?
