We see the Progress Pride Flag, Rainbow flag, MAGA flag, BLM flag, Confederate flag, Back the Blue flag, etc. The more divisive we become, the more flags we create. What is happening? What ever happened to that great unifier, the flag we all flew after 9/11? The Stars and Stripes, the flag that says we are all in this together, the great American flag.

EVs do more good than gas vehicles

A reader addressed limitations of electric car batteries and wondered whether any thought had been put into potential problems of power outages leading to traffic jams ["Contingency plans needed for EVs," Just Sayin', Oct. 15]. I own a hybrid electric vehicle, and I think these vehicles are a way to help society transition away from fossil fuels. My car can go 25 to 30 miles on a full charge before needing to revert to gas. This takes care of my daily 25-mile round-trip commute and other local driving. With both electric and gas, it gets over 50 miles per gallon. I charge my car at home in under six hours using a regular outlet. My monthly electric bill is a bit higher, but it is still significantly less than the cost of gas, and saves me from enduring the stress of gyrating prices at the gas pump.

To the reader who is worried about electric cars clogging the highways during a power outage, so will gas-powered autos. Gas pumps run on electricity.

Candidates: Mail to your own district

A reader wrote about the useless advertising mailers he receives ["In search of just one mailer of value," Just Sayin', Oct. 15]. How about the useless political campaign mailers? Twice a week, I receive a mailer from a state Senate candidate asking for my vote. Unfortunately, my address is not located in that candidate's district so I couldn’t vote for that person even if I wanted to. Isn’t it possible for these politicians to send mailers to the zip codes in their districts instead of selecting others in Nassau County? It's a waste of campaign funds.
Christine Gietschier, Westbury

Does anyone else find the recent plethora of unsolicited text messages, emails, phone calls and direct mail from some candidates in Nassau and Suffolk even more annoying than those calls you receive from telemarketers trying to sell you an extended warranty for your car?
