Musings: How long before fixing sidewalks?

It is great to see, with spring having arrived, workers will be repairing potholes on our roads here in Nassau County. However, I am curious why the sidewalks along Merrick Avenue in East Meadow have continued to remain in serious disrepair for so many years.
This is a real danger to pedestrians. Sidewalks in certain spots are lifting up due to tree roots. Trash and leaves seem to be everywhere, some items just inviting a trip-and-fall situation. Of particular concern is that these sidewalks are also on the walking route for students who attend Barnum Woods Elementary School.
I wonder how many people have fallen on these unkept sidewalks? Would it be prudent for some of our tax money to be allocated to repair the concrete and clean them up?
