Musings: It's time for a third party

Having taught American History for 34 years, I’ve had the opportunity to explore political parties. During that time, I have always felt that third parties have little or no chance of winning a national election. At the same time, they have provided us with some valuable ideas that major parties have adopted and put to use in our democracy.
Unfortunately, with the political climate being what it is, with both parties essentially being hijacked by their extreme wings, we are in desperate need for a third major party to emerge in this country.
As we stand now, when either major party takes over the presidency, it immediately spends its four years dismantling the actions of its rival. When this occurs, little is done for most of the population. The other party takes over and then takes apart the previous party’s work. The country therefore stagnates and goes nowhere fast.
We need a third party to emerge that seriously looks to incorporate the positives from both parties — hopefully, there are still some left — and think about making a solid future for all in this country.
I fear if we continue electing extremists and people who think revenge is more important than progress, we will be a doomed nation.
