Jasmine Anderson
Morning anchorJasmine.Anderson@newsday.comHello Long Islanders! I’m thrilled to serve as your weekday morning anchor for NewsdayTV.
My introduction to storytelling began on a school day, in the family room of my parents’ home in Chicago. Dad started the day with a newspaper in one hand and a remote control in the other, clicking through the channels and watching the local morning news. At the end of the day, he would cut out the “Love is” comic strip and give it to my mother to add to her collection. My father had a routine, which would later become my own later in life.
I hope to empower Long Islanders through storytelling.
I attended the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, where I found my voice in the broadcast world. After graduating, I received a “crash course” on various jobs in the business at my first stop in Greenville, Mississippi. I produced, wrote, shot and edited a show that I’d turn around and anchor at WABG-TV. I later moved back to Champaign, where I started my morning show journey. I was a live reporter for our four-hour show, then produced and anchored a noon show on WCIA-TV.
Before coming to NewsdayTV, I worked in Oklahoma City for almost seven years. I covered severe weather, crime and pandemic unemployment woes, and I curated a franchise on race relations and another franchise highlighting Black and Brown leaders in the community. I’m most proud of my Emmy-nominated series on the Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial. The focus was not only on the horrors of the massacre, but how resilient Black Tulsans were able to come together and rebuild without the help of state, or federal aid. The series also focused on how three known living survivors were still fighting for reparations. Before leaving Oklahoma, I was awarded “Best Morning Newscast” by the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters, which is a full circle moment for me because I helped launch "Good Day OK" in 2016.
While at Newsday, I hope to empower Long Islanders through storytelling. There’s so much to uncover here, and I’m so grateful to have joined an illustrious group of journalists who care about this community and want to make a difference. If you have a story idea, please send me an email at janderson@newsday.com. Otherwise, wake up with us every morning on NewsdayTV.
I can’t wait to immerse myself in the things that make Long Island … Long Island, so if you have any recommendations, please reach out to me. I’m a dog mom with a huge appetite for culture and food. I’m obsessed with historic and modern architecture. Once upon a time, I thought I’d be the next Frank Lloyd Wright. Now I create in a different way that allows me to connect with people in their homes (depending on the piece) and share their stories.
