A one-of-a-kind property in Fire Island Pines known as "The Pyramid House" is on the market for $4.25 million. The annual property taxes are $7,841.

Built in 1961, the house was transformed in 2006 by architect Hal Hayes. The exterior shape never changed — it was always a pyramid — but the bold wall of glass replaced four sets of French doors.

The pyramid stands among the last row of houses heading east on Sail Walk, which is in a quiet section of the neighborhood, said listing agent Glenn Rice, of Brown Harris Stevens.

"Fire Island has a lot of wonderful, mid-century houses," he said. "But there is nothing quite this dramatic in terms of the shape. No other house really has this grandeur."

The house contains three bedrooms and 2½ bathrooms, and stands at 2,100 square feet. It sits on a 0.18-acre lot.

The renovation included an interior expansion and the addition of three pyramid-shaped structures that sit poolside in the backyard. Two of them are cabanas, while the third contains a bathroom.

The primary suite is located downstairs and measures approximately 900 square feet, Rice said. It features a dressing room, a bathroom with a 6-by-8-foot shower and a private study.

The main floor comes to life in its pyramid shape, with standout features such as a 25-foot ceiling and a double-sided wood burning fireplace that "casts a glow into the kitchen and living room," said Rice.

Another selling point is the all-encompassing view, he added.

"The view goes east toward Water Island," said Rice. "You have the ocean, the bay and you have a mile or two of dunes. That view is very special out there."

There are a couple different seating options for eating and entertaining guests, Rice noted: the dining area inside or the pool deck, which has room for furniture.

"The dining deck faces the Fire Island National Seashore, so it can never be built on — that view is protected," he said.

Rice added that the house is designed for a single person or couple, and could also be an investment opportunity.

"The ideal owner is going to be someone who likes peace, quiet and privacy," he said, "and who wants an architecturally important home."

The property is served by the Fire Island Union Free School District.
