Converted firehouse in Orient on market for $2.2 million
Weighty red doors set against white siding allude to an Orient home's past life. Once a village firehouse, the Orchard Street home has 12-foot ceilings and 4,000 square feet of living space.
Converted from firehouse to residence by a previous owner, the four-bedroom, four-bathroom home is on the market for $2.2 million. Annual taxes on the 0.12-acre property, which falls within the Oysterponds Union Free School District, total $8,287.
"If you look at the exterior, those big doors, that's where the firetrucks used to actually go into the firehouse," said listing agent Kristy Naddell, of Douglas Elliman Real Estate.
The Southold Town assessor's office confirmed the residence was once a fire house, sold by the fire district in April 1991.
Naddell has sold homes that were once churches, she said, but this is different.
"It's my first firehouse conversion sale," she said. "It's definitely for a unique buyer, looking for something with a lot of history and charm, but it's also been modernized."
The house has been fully renovated and redesigned since its fire department days, Naddell said. The kitchen has updated appliances; spaces are heated by natural gas and forced air and cooled by central air conditioning. A garage offers space for one car.
Among present-day features are an open living area with a small prep kitchen, a loft area, a main kitchen and a screened-in porch. A spiral staircase with black spindles and medium-brown wooden stairs leads to the second floor.
"It's mostly house, and then there's a nice side yard," Naddell said of the property. "For someone who doesn't want a lot of maintenance, who doesn't want to have a pool, who just kind of wants a great house, easy maintenance, it's perfect for that."
