Alex Rodriguez will play both games for Yankees on Tuesday

With the Yankees hosting a doubleheader Tuesday against the Blue Jays, there’s the potential for one day filled with twice the amount of all that comes with Alex Rodriguez.

At the very least, he'll have played in both games.

After Monday’s off day, A-Rod played third base and went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in the first game. Rodriguez was in the lineup for the second game, batting fifth as the designated hitter, but manager Joe Girardi said before the first game that he was undecided about the slugger's status for Game 2..

“My original thought was no,” Girardi said during his pregame press conference, “but we’ll see. “

Girardi explained that whether or not Rodriguez played both games depended on the availability of shortstop Eduardo Nunez, who left Sunday’s game in the sixth inning because of a tight right hamstring.

Nunez was not in the lineup for the afternoon game. He underwent an MRI Monday and the results were negative, but he is still experiencing some tightness, Girardi said.

Nunez was in the starting lineup for the second game, playing third base and batting seventh.

Jayson Nix received the start at shortstop in the first game because of the unavailability of Nunez. Nix, who is hitting .232 with a .300 on-base percentage, went 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored.

Of course, if healthy, Derek Jeter would presumably be the team’s shortstop. Girardi said Jeter, who is on the disabled list because of a strained right calf, is scheduled to participate in a simulated game Tuesday, where he’ll run the bases.

Girardi added he was “unsure” if Jeter would play in Tampa when the Yankees open a three-game series against the Rays on Friday and did not provide any information regarding a potential rehab assignment.

“There’s a plan in place,” Girardi said. “But I’m not going to reveal the plan until we get there.”
