David Wright stands alone.
The Mets third baseman took the all-time franchise hits lead tonight with a soft grounder down the third-base line for his 1,419th hit, passing the mark set in 1979 by Ed Kranepool.
The hit itself was hardly memorable. He hit a soft grounder, charged hard toward first base, then pulled into second following an errant throw by Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez. But realizing the achievement immediately, the crowd at a half-full Citi Field gave Wright a standing ovation. He acknowledged their applause from second base -- smiling from beneath his batting helmet.
Wright reached the milestone in his 1,256th career game, well ahead of the 1,853 contests that Kranepool played from 1962 to 1979 to establish the old record.
"Numbers are made to be broken," Kranepool said last week.
