Jason Bay designated for assignment by Mariners

The Mariners designated outfielder Jason Bay for assignment Monday afternoon in order to clear a roster spot for returning slugger Mike Morse, the team announced.
Bay, a former 30-home run bat, was released by the Mets after three unproductive and injury-riddled seasons in Flushing after the 2012 season. He signed a one-year, $1 million deal with Seattle this offseason and won a spot on the opening day roster.
Bay batted .204 with a .691 on-base plus slugging percentage and 11 home runs in 236 plate appearances, in what could be viewed as a "return" of his former power potential. Bay managed just 26 home runs in 1,125 plate appearances during his three seasons in New York.
Morse, eligible for free agency at the end of the season, could be highly sought-after as the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline approaches. Morse is batting .251 with a .767 OPS and 11 home runs.
