Ice Bucket Challenge drops in on Mets
The Mets were all wet Friday -- for a good cause.
The entire roster plus manager Terry Collins, coaches and staff got doused with ice-cold water on the field four hours before Friday night's game against the Cubs at Citi Field.
The Mets had been invited by Jets general manager John Idzik to participate in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, and they accepted.
Sports stars, other celebrities and plain ol' common folk have been getting dunked with buckets of icy water to bring attention to the fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
The premise is that you have to donate $100 if you don't want to get dunked. But most people are donating even after getting dunked.
After getting dunked, people are supposed to challenge three others to participate. The Jets, who were challenged by the Patriots, challenged the Mets and Yankees, among others.
The Mets, in turn, challenged Daily Show host and Mets fan Jon Stewart and SNY announcers Gary Cohen, Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez.
More than $5.5 million has been raised for ALS research since July 29, according to Time.com.
Dice-K outing
Daisuke Matsuzaka (elbow inflammation) will pitch Saturday for Double-A Binghamton in a rehab start and Jacob deGrom will throw for the first time since being shut down with rotator cuff tendinitis. Those events are not unrelated. How quickly deGrom returns and how well Rafael Montero does will influence how the Mets use Dice-K when he is ready, Collins said. The Mets hope deGrom will be back next Saturday . . . Chris Young's release was made official.
