Omar Quintanilla gets call with Justin Turner on DL

Thanks to that dreaded injury bug, the Mets’ latest game of musical chairs at shortstop continued Tuesday when they placed Justin Turner on the 15-day DL.

Turner was examined at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan and the Mets were awaiting the results to see if any further damage was done other than the initial diagnosis of a sprained right ankle. Turner, who was injured after jamming his ankle into first base during a rundown in Monday’s loss, had been playing the position in part because starter Ruben Tejada and reserve Ronny Cedeño were sidelined with injuries.

The Mets were forced to call up Omar Quintanilla from Triple-A Buffalo and insert him into the starting lineup Tuesday night. Manny Acosta, whose ERA ballooned to 11.86 after serving up a backbreaking three-run homer Monday, was designated for assignment and the Mets recalled reliever Chris Schwinden from Buffalo.

The Western New York-Citi Field Express was in full force.

“So the bus from Buffalo arrived today,” Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said, “as it normally does. So we’re all set.”

Alderson praised his club’s resiliency through all these injuries, particularly at shortstop. “The guys in that clubhouse have played very well,” he said. “We are on our fourth shortstop, but in a way, I think it’s a testimony to the depth that we have at that position.”
