The non-waiver trade deadline has passed and third baseman Chase Headley is staying in San Diego, reports Jon Paul Morosi.

Headley, 28, is hitting .268 with 12 home runs and a .369 on-base percentage. He emerged as a hot candidate at the hot corner as July progressed, with the Athletics and Yankees mentioned as having interest.

Though the deadline has passed, trading season is not over. It just gets more difficult.

For a team to make a trade now, a player must first pass through waivers without being claimed. Players with larger contracts (think Alfonso Soriano) normally have no trouble clearing waivers and become August trade candidates.
