Terry Collins, Sandy Alderson to discuss Johan Santana's future
WASHINGTON — Terry Collins and general manager Sandy Alderson will discuss Johan Santana’s immediate future Monday, when the Mets return from their road trip. “As of right now, [Santana] is starting Thursday,” the manager said before Saturday night’s game. “I have no idea what we’re going to do.”
On Friday, Santana had his fifth straight start allowing six or more runs. The pros of a shutdown: Santana has been throwing baseballs since Dec. 15, when he began his recovery from left shoulder surgery, and fatigue is clearly a part of his lousy run. The con is that Santana’s control issues of late could be helped by more game work, as his shoulder feels fine. “There’s some things we have to concern ourselves with to make sure next year he’s healthy,” Collins said.
