The Yankees have cut backup first baseman/outfielder Juan Rivera, Newsday's Erik Boland reports.

Rivera said he was told that he was cut so that the Yankees could hold on to outfielder Ben Francisco and first baseman Lyle Overbay. Both Francisco and Overbay were signed during the middle of spring training.

Rivera, who played for the Yankees from 2001-03, rejoined the club in January on a minor-league deal. He played in 19 spring training games and hit .305 with 18 hits in 59 at-bats, including five doubles and five RBIs.
