MIAMI — The death of the 14-year-old son of former Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner is being investigated as a possible case of food poisoning during a family vacation in Costa Rica, CNN reported on Tuesday.

Miller Gardner died on Friday, the family announced in a statement released by the Yankees on Sunday. The statement did not contain information about where the incident took place or the cause of death.

According to CNN, Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Police told the outlet that Gardner and his family were vacationing at a hotel in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica, when multiple family members fell ill.

Toxicology tests will determine the official cause of death, Costa Rican officials told CNN.

A Yankees official declined to comment.

Brett Gardner played his entire 14-year career with the Yankees from 2008-21. The Yankees open the season at home on Thursday.
